Who is your favorite client?

In a previous post, I talked about how to get more clients like your best clients. I was referring to the class of clients who provide you with the most work, the most referrals, and the least amount of trouble.

Today, I want you to think about your favorite client.

Not your biggest or best client, necessarily, or the one who sends you the most referrals. I’m talking about the client you most like being around.

Identify them by name. Picture them. Think about them.

Why are they your favorite?

Is it their personality? Are they easy going? Do they make you laugh?

Knowing why someone is your favorite client will help you more easily spot people like them, if not actually attract them.

Do you remember where you met them? Networking? Who introduced you? Through an ad? In what publication? A referral? From whom?

If you were introduced to your favorite client through another client, for example, maybe you should be paying more attention to that mutual client. If you met them at a Rotary event, maybe you should spend more time at Rotary events.

But this exercise isn’t just about finding more clients like your favorite clients. It’s not just about marketing. It’s about appreciation. Counting your blessings. Feeling good about yourself.

You see, you would not have a favorite client if you didn’t attract them into your life. And you wouldn’t attract them if you didn’t have some of the same qualities that you admire in them.

Like attracts like. The things you appreciate about other people are things you appreciate about yourself.

So, here’s what I want you to do. I want you to call your favorite client and say, “I just want you to know that you are my favorite client.” Tell them what you like and appreciate about them. Go put a smile on the face of your favorite client.

And then give yourself a pat on your back for being so damn attractive.

Lawyers, do you need clients? That’s why you don’t get them.

Nobody wants to hire an attorney who needs clients. They want an attorney who is extremely busy but willing to make room for one more deserving client.

Busy attorneys are successful. Validated by their busy-ness. They must be good. Look at all the other people who say so.

Attorneys who need clients are not successful. They may be competent, they may deliver great service, they may be everything a client could want in an attorney, but if they need clients, well, they can’t really be good, can they?

To attract good clients you need to be attractive. That’s not something you can fake. This is not about pretending to be busy or letting people think you are important because you had lunch with someone important. Being attractive is not on the outside.

Being attractive means knowing your value. It means loving yourself and your gifts and wanting to share those gifts through your work. It means walking with confidence and an inner peace, trusting completely in the inevitability of your success.

Being attractive means knowing that no matter what your financial situation is right now, you don’t need clients, they need you. You don’t look for clients, you let them find you.

Wanting clients is fine. Needing clients is why you don’t get them.

Marketing means showing people the value you offer. Here’s how.

You want to be more productive? Ask yourself this question every day.

I get it. You’re incredibly busy. You have way too much to do and not enough time to do it. You’re getting things done but wonder if you’re doing enough.

Take a breath. Stop worrying about how much you’re not getting done.

The truth is you’ll never get it all done and it doesn’t matter. Being productive isn’t about how much you do, it’s about doing what’s important.

Take a look at your to-do list for today. All the calls and emails, the errands, the work that is on deadline. Lots of things you have to do and you will get most of them done.

Because you have to.

You’ll file that motion because it’s due. You’ll make that call because the other guy is waiting. You’ll write that letter because you want to settle the case.

But what about the important things you don’t have to do? Things that will advance your career or improve your life but don’t have a deadline or someone else waiting or watching?

This is the sweet spot in your growth. This is where you advance towards your long term goals. This is where you find your purpose instead of just taking care of your obligations.

Every day, when you write down your to-do list, I suggest you ask yourself this question:

“What is the most important thing I can do today that I don’t have to do?”

Your answer may be “to start exercising” because you want to get in shape. It’s important but you don’t have to do it. Now, at least you are aware of what’s important.

If you ask yourself that question again tomorrow and you get the same answer, you might pick up that exercise book you bought three years ago and put it on your desk. The next day you might actually read the first chapter.

It might be six months before you do your first push up or register for that hot yoga class, and that’s okay. You may never have done it if you had not asked yourself, “What is the most important thing I can do today that I don’t have to do?”

Public speaking tips for lawyers

Public speaking is a great way for lawyers to build their reputation and meet new contacts. But great material isn’t enough to make a great presentation. You have to deliver that material with a great performance.

The first rule of public speaking is displaying good energy. You may be passionate about your subject matter but unless you transfer that emotion to the audience, through your words, tone of voice, and body language, your message won’t get through.

I’ve had to work on this myself. I recall a time about ten years ago I gave a presentation and when I got off stage I asked my co-presenter what he thought about my talk. He said, “Do you drink coffee?” When I said I did, he told me I should drink more.

If you do any live presentations (or want to), here are a few tips for doing a better presentation:

  • Don’t attempt to teach your audience everything. A few key points is all you need and all anyone can handle.
  • Never tell “the history of” anything. Get to the point: what do I need to know right now?
  • If you use slides, don’t cram them with text. A few lines with a few words each.
  • Speak into the microphone and project your voice to the back of the room. Nobody will hear you or understand you if you sound like Charlie Brown’s teacher.
  • Modulate your voice. Use a mixture of highs and lows, fast and slow pace.
  • Talk to the audience, not at them. Ask questions, tell stories, say something unusual or funny.
  • Make eye contact with as many people as you can. Use their names if you know them or you can read their name tags.
  • Don’t just stand there, move. Walk around, gesture, throw something (just kidding).
  • Keep it short. Twenty minutes is about all anyone can handle before their mind wanders.
  • Tell them what to do next. Give them a web site and tell them what to do when they get there. Offer something in return for their business card. Or give them a homework assignment.
  • Thank your hosts, thank the audience, and thank God nobody fell asleep.

I’m certainly not the best speaker in the world. But I’m better today than I was last year and I’ll be better next year than I am this year. Speaking is a skill and it can be learned. Practice, get feedback, and practice some more.

Being an attorney will get you asked to speak. Being a good speaker will get you asked back.

What to do when you forget someone’s name

I once had a friend who had an almost uncanny ability to remember people’s names. It allowed him to build a large network of contacts and a very successful business.

We did a lot of networking together so I got to watch him in action. Like the rest of us, he would often forget the name of someone he had just been introduced to, but soon thereafter, he was introducing his new contact, by name, to others in the room. How did he do it? He did it by getting his ego out of the way and simply asking his new contact to “tell me your name again,” sometimes two or three times before he had it.

Most of us are too embarrassed to admit we forgot a person’s name so we skirt around it. Not my friend. He felt it was vital to know and use people’s names and he was willing to do whatever it took to accomplish that.

Time and time again I’d watch him ask people to repeat their name. Even with people he supposedly knew for a long time. Sometimes he’d tell them he had a poor memory and if they say their name again it will help him remember. He was genuine and easy going about it. I think most of them appreciated that he cared enough to ask.

My ego is too fragile, I’m afraid. I’d rather rely on tricks. I’ll give you my favorite: only network where everyone wears a name tag.

Your clients hate when you do this

When you have a client in the office, have you ever said “hold my calls” to your receptionist or whoever answers the phone? You shouldn’t have. It should be understood that unless there is an emergency, when you have someone in the office, you don’t take calls.

And yet, I know many lawyers do. Not you, of course. But we all know someone.

It’s rude. People don’t like it. It tells the client, “you’re not as important as the person on the phone, or as important as me, and I don’t care if I’m wasting your time.”

Even if the call is just a few seconds. Your next appointment calling to tell you they are running late, or opposing counsel telling you the case is settled and you don’t have to go to the settlement conference that afternoon.

The same goes for text messages. Unless your wife is about to go into labor, you shouldn’t be looking at your phone. And if your wife is about to go into labor, you should tell your client that’s why you’re checking your phone so he doesn’t think you’re a boob.

Aside from being rude and selfish, it’s bad posture. It tells your clients that you are poorly organized. Or hungry for new business and lacking self-confidence. You answer the phone because it might be a prospective client and you don’t want to lose them.

Weak.

I think some lawyers think taking calls actually gives them better posture. They think it says, “I’m very important. Look at all the people who want to talk to me.”

Notsomuch.

Here’s an idea you might want to run with.

Create a document, pledging your commitment to never taking calls or looking at texts during client meetings. Let people know that your clients are important to you and deserve your full attention.

Send this to all of your clients. Put it in your “new client kit”. Post it on your web site. Have it engraved and put it up on your wall. When a new client or prospect is in the office, call their attention to it. Let them know you really mean it.

It doesn’t matter that most attorneys don’t take calls during client meetings. Most of them don’t have a pledge. So when you do, you stand out. People talk about you. Remember you.

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

Rev. Robert Schuller asks, “What would you do if you knew you could not fail?” It’s one of my favorite quotes.

I’ve often asked myself this question. When I found my confidence lacking, when a project got stalled because I didn’t know what to do next, or when I was faced with a major career decision, I would stop and think about the “best case scenario” and it helped me move forward.

I think it’s because of the word “if”. “What would do if. . .” is a hypothetical question. We can answer it because we’re not promising anything, we’re speculating. The question allows us to bypass our critical mind and find the answers.

We may still have fears and doubts but now we know what we would do if we didn’t.

If you are procrastinating on updating your web site, imagine that in 90 days that web site is bringing you four or five or ten new clients a month. If God Himself whispered in your ear and told you that your web site will be massively successful, what would you do today?

You’d make a list of tasks that need to be done and you’d start working on them, wouldn’t you? If you don’t know what those tasks might be, your first task would be to find someone who does know and ask them what to do.

If you knew for certain that things would work out exactly the way you wanted (or better), what would you attempt? If you knew that your project would be a success, what would you do today to move it forward?

Whatever it is that you would do if you knew you could not fail, that’s what you should do.

How to break bad news to a client

A lawyer asked for advice on how best to break bad news to your client when a case is lost.

Great Question.

The answer is simple. Man up and tell them. Don’t make excuses, don’t cast blame, and don’t parse words. Tell the truth and tell it point blank.

If it was your fault, admit it, and deal with the consequences.

But here’s the thing: if you manage things right, the bad news shouldn’t devastate the client. Disappoint, sadden, yes, but not unreasonably anger. You shouldn’t need to hang a “Gun Free Zone” sign in your office.

What do I mean when I say “if you manage things right”? I mean that from the time you first take the case and throughout its execution, you should manage the client’s expectations about its outcome.

That means not sugar coating the prospects of winning the case or the potential size of the verdict. In fact, you should do the opposite. Under promise. Project low. Tell them there’s a good chance you won’t win at all.

Yes, they might have second thoughts about having you as their attorney and go somewhere else. Let them go. They’ll be nothing but trouble. You want clients who appreciate your honesty and openness, and who appreciate your hard work in the face of big challenges.

Throughout the case, keep them informed. Let them see the ebb and flow, the positives and negatives. Help them to detach emotionally from the outcome. When something is good, remember to show them the other side. That’s why God invented the phrase, “On the other hand. . .”. When it’s bad, do the same thing. You don’t want to be a Debbie or Dennis Downer.

If you’ve done it right, by the time the case comes to a conclusion, they will be mentally prepared for any outcome. Win or lose, big verdict or not so big. They may not be happy, but they will be prepared.

The virtue of wasting time

“Quit goofing off and get back to work!” Have you ever said that to your kids or your employees? I know you’ve said it to yourself.

We seemed to be obsessed with the idea that wasting time is a bad thing. I know, “wasting” implies “no value,” but is that really true?

Me thinks not.

Playing video games, checking in or posting on social media, watching football, or whatever you like to do when you’re not doing what you think you’re supposed to do, is not wasting time. I can think of several reasons why it is good for you. And if its good for you, then its good for your work and other aspects of your life.

  • It helps you relax. Stress is a major health risk. Goofing off helps us forget our troubles and lower our blood pressure. Laughing has been proven to improve mental and physical health.
  • It helps you think. When our conscious minds are distracted, our subconscious minds come up with ideas, solve problems, and help us make decisions.
  • It improves skills. Gaming can improve hand-eye coordination and sharpen critical thinking. Watching sports can teach you about leadership, strategy, and team effort. Social media can help you learn about pop culture, which can be used in conversation and writing.
  • It helps you meet new people. With many hobbies and personal interests, you get to meet new people–at the game or the sports bar, online, at the concert, or the convention. New people bring new ideas, new contacts, new business.
  • It affirms life. The purpose of life is joy, not work.

Is there such a thing as spending too much time “wasting time”? Our bosses, parents, and spouses may think so, especially if they’ve seen us spending an hour or two on a site like this one. But it’s really the wrong question.

Better to ask, “Are you getting your work done?”, “Are you making a contribution to the world,” and “Are you happy?”

If you can answer those questions in the affirmative, I don’t think the amount of time you spend conquering pretend kingdoms or contemplating your navel really matters.

Building your marketing investment account one day at a time

Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

Is marketing a habit for you?

You’ll often hear me say that you can build your practice with 15 minutes a day of marketing activity. Anybody can find 15 minutes today, but most don’t do it every day because it isn’t a habit. Unfortunately, it won’t become a habit until you do it every day.

But then nothing starts out as a habit. Everything starts out as “the first time”. And then you do it again. Now you’re two days into it. One more day and you’re on your way. Keep going and it will become a habit, especially once you see some positive results.

Leo at Zen Habits has an excellent article today on building habits. He uses the analogy of saving and investing money, i.e., putting away a little bit every day. Over time, the dollars compound.

If you want to (or need to) write, for example, but have not been able to make it a habit, he says:

“. . .just write a sentence today. I’m completely serious. Then write a sentence tomorrow. Do that for a week. Next week, write two sentences. This sound ridiculously easy, so most people will ignore this advice. But if you follow it, you’ll be writing 1,000 words per day, every day, this time next year. Maybe 2,000 per day the following year.”

In the context of marketing, then, if you have not developed the habit of doing something every day for 15 minutes, start with one minute. Read something, write down an idea or two, or just sit and think. That will get you started.

The other thing about habits is that we have to be reminded to do them. “Set a daily reminder. . . and make it a priority to do each day,” Leo says. I take it a step further, suggesting you making a daily appointment with yourself and put this on your calendar. Then, keep that appointment. If a new clients wants to see you at 2 and that’s your marketing time, you must tell them you have an appointment and can’t see them until 2:15.

Yes, we are what we repeatedly do. Today, you may be in the habit of NOT marketing. You’re excellent at not marketing, in fact. But today, you can start a new habit. All you need is one minute.
